Breast Milk Cookies (?!)

Working at baby beloved, inc. I hear many tips and tricks moms have found along the way in  their breastfeeding journey. Recently a mother came in with concerns of supply. We got to talking about the things that she has tried and she mentioned 'breast milk cookies'. "Cookies? Did you say COOKIES?" I exclaimed. The first thing that crossed my mind was how difficult it was for me to remember to take my supplements - and how easy it was for me to clean up a plate of cookies like it was nobody's business.

I went to "Harvest Health" (our local health food store) and realized I had forgotten to look up the recipe and get my list of ingredients - so I called my brother Blaine.
"Can you look up a recipe for me? I'm at the store and need to get the stuff for it"
"Ok." He says "What's it called?"
"Breast Milk Cookies."
"awww.....man.....for real?"
"Just do it."

This lead into the schpeal I've been having to give out to just about everyone whom I've told about them.
"They don't HAVE breast milk in them - they are to help with milk production."
Kaitlyn says..."It's not like I eat chocolate chip cookies to make chocolate chips." .....I guess not. Still, calling them Breast Milk Cookies only keeps people out of them. Let them think what they want if it means they won't eat them all!

Anyways, I gathered my ingredients - ALL ORGANIC - and couldn't wait to make them. These really aren't much different than oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. The ingredients that help with the production are 1. Oatmeal and 2. Brewers Yeast (see this article for the benefits of Brewers Yeast). Both generally good for everyone, but great for the mother who is trying to make more milk. The batch I made produced around 50 cookies. I used an ice cream scoop so they would all be pretty much the same size. I think I've been overdosing on them a bit and have absolutely positively sensed a change in my milk production. I'm not overflowing by any means, but I am certainly feeling fuller than usual. Today is the third day and I've had at least 4 a day - which is the recommendation.

I brought the cookies to my breastfeeding support group and heard great reviews! Not only are these absolutely delicious (seriously...the cookies are REALLY good) they are WORKING. I couldn't be happier! I love to bake - and with Zander at 11 months now I worry about loosing production. I really do have a hard time to take any kind of pills including vitamins and supplements - I have never in my life forgotten about a cookie. This is a match made in nursing heaven.

So, are you intrigued yet? Even if you are not nursing these are incredibly healthy cookies. They will NOT make you lactate - and I promise there is no breast milk in them. I for one am planning on going to the Fulton Street Artisans Market with my new clips and I am making these cookies and selling 4 cookies for $5.00 or $1.50 each (considering I found some of these for sale on line and they are $44 for 30 cookies that's not a bad deal). So, if you are local and just want to try them, stop out!  Otherwise - try this recipe for yourself and let me know if they worked for you!

These sound amazing! I will have to try them soon. I think I will end up letting people believe that they have breast milk in them, though. I'm not really into the whole sharing thing.
